What is a Birth Chart?

From birth details to astrological interpretation.

A birth chart is calculated for the exact time and place of birth and forms the basis for individual astrological interpretation.

The chart graphic shows where the Sun, Moon, and planets were positioned at the moment of birth. It also shows the division of the houses, key axis points like the ascendant, and the angular relationships (aspects) between these points.

From Birth Details to Chart Graphic

To calculate a birth chart, three pieces of information are required:

  • Date of birth
  • Time of birth (as accurately as possible)
  • Place of birth

Using these details, we astronomically calculate the exact positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets in the zodiac at the moment of birth. The time and place of birth also determine the ascendant and the division of the twelve houses.

The result is traditionally represented as a circle. All these layers converge within this chart graphic.

Sun, Moon, and Planets

The Sun, Moon, and planets represent fundamental human functions and traits (such as self-expression, emotions, thinking, or drive).

In astrological interpretation, they are associated with certain core themes. However, their precise meaning only emerges based on the zodiac sign and life area (house) they occupy, and how they interact with other planets.

Zodiac Signs

The zodiac is divided into twelve equal sections of 30 degrees each: the well-known zodiac signs from Aries to Pisces. They indicate in which section a planet or the ascendant is positioned.

In interpretation, the zodiac signs describe the how: the manner, temperament, and style in which a planet expresses itself.

Astrological zodiac signs are not identical to the astronomical constellations in the sky.

Houses and the Ascendant

Like the zodiac, the twelve houses divide the chart. While the zodiac signs are the same for everyone at any given time, the house division depends on the place and exact time of birth.

The starting point is the Ascendant: the point of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Like a planet, this point has a fixed address in the zodiac (e.g., Leo 12°). Opposite it in the west lies the Descendant; the second axis connects the highest point at noon (Medium Coeli, MC) with the lowest point (Imum Coeli, IC). Based on this framework, the chart is divided into twelve sections around the circle. In astrological interpretation, these twelve houses represent different areas of life (such as partnership, career, family, or daily routine).

Aspects

The distances between planets also play a decisive role. The angle between their positions on the chart circle is measured.

Certain angles have specific names in astrology: 120 degrees is called a trine, 180 degrees is an opposition. These angular relationships are called aspects.

In interpretation, aspects show how planets and points like the ascendant interact: whether they support and reinforce each other, or whether they create tension and internal friction.

An Important Distinction: Calculation and Interpretation

The starting point is always the astronomically exact birth chart.

Then follows the step of interpretation: What themes are touched upon? What patterns emerge?

The birth chart is calculated exactly. Its significance is interpreted astrologically.

Planets, Signs, and Houses: Who, How, and Where

Anyone seeing a chart for the first time looks at many symbols in a circle. Behind them is a clear system based on fundamental questions:

  • Planet (Who or What?): Which personality trait or drive is the focus? (e.g., the Sun for self-expression, the Moon for emotional needs, Mercury for thinking).
  • Zodiac Sign (How?): In what manner does this trait manifest? (e.g., dynamically, thoughtfully, emotionally, or rationally).
  • House (Where?): In which area of life does this primarily take place? (e.g., in career, personal relationships, or daily routine).
  • Aspects (How do they interact?): How do these parts interact? (Do they support each other, or do they create tension?).

Only when these layers are combined does a coherent picture emerge – rather than disconnected, unrelated pieces of information.

What is an Aspect?

A chart circle has 360 degrees. This allows for the precise determination of the geometric angle between two planets or key points such as the ascendant.

For central angular distances, astrology uses traditional terms:

Aspect Angle
Conjunction 0°
Sextile 60°
Square 90°
Trine 120°
Quincunx 150°
Opposition 180°

Effective aspects also exist between planets and axis points such as the ascendant or the MC.

An aspect does not have to be exact down to the arc minute. In practice, a small margin applies, called the orb. Which aspects and tolerances are used is part of the astrological method.

HOW ANALYSES ARE CREATED

Why isn’t the “Zodiac Sign” enough?

The “zodiac sign” familiar from magazine horoscopes is merely the sign the Sun was in at the time of birth.

It describes one important core element but is only a small part of the chart.

A full birth chart contains much more: the Moon and all planets, the main axes (Ascendant and Descendant, MC and IC), the twelve areas of life (houses), and the network of angular connections between them.

This is why the exact birth time is so important: people born on the same day have almost the same planetary positions – but due to a different birth time, they have completely different ascendants, houses, and therefore very different personal dynamics.

From Individual Aspect to the Full Picture

An individual aspect initially describes only the direct connection between two planets. However, many connections act simultaneously in a chart. AstroScienceHub therefore distinguishes between two perspectives:

5-Aspect Analysis

The 5-Aspect Analysis selects five particularly defining configurations and explains them step by step.

This makes it transparent which planets are interacting and what their significance is. It offers an easily understandable, focused introduction to the main themes of your chart.

Full Picture

The Full Picture views the chart as a whole: it incorporates other important configurations and describes their interplay within overarching personal life themes.

Instead of isolated statements, recurring patterns, internal areas of tension, and personal development opportunities become visible.

What can an astrological interpretation achieve?

For AstroScienceHub, a birth chart is a reliable framework for reflection:

The interpretation describes potential strengths, internal friction points, and life themes. It encourages you to better understand and organize your own facets.

However, it is not a psychological diagnosis and not a judgment of fate. It does not define you, and it does not dictate how you should live your life.

Astrological interpretation describes possibilities – not a predetermined future.

Birth Chart or Radix?

In astrology, the Latin word Radix (meaning root) is often used for the personal birth chart.

Both terms mean exactly the same thing: the foundational chart of an individual, calculated for their specific time and place of birth.
