What is Synastry?

Two birth charts are placed in relation to one another.

For an astrological partnership analysis, the birth charts of two people are first calculated independently. We then examine which astrological connections exist between the two charts.

This method is called synastry.

Two People – Two Birth Charts

From the date of birth, the most accurate time of birth possible, and the place of birth, an individual birth chart is calculated for each person.

It contains the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets in the zodiac, their placement in the houses, as well as the ascendant and descendant. These factors form the basis for the astrological description of the respective person.

For a partnership analysis, both birth charts remain independent systems. They are not merged into a new, combined birth chart.

What does Synastry mean?

Synastry refers to the astrological comparison of two birth charts.

To this end, factors from one chart are placed in relation to factors from the other. For example, the Moon of Person A can form a specific angle to the Saturn of Person B. Such angular relationships are called aspects.

In this context, the frequently used term relationship horoscope does not refer to a third chart. The basis of the analysis is the two personal birth charts and the astrological relationships between them.

Two Charts in a Joint Representation

For synastry, both birth charts can be represented together in a bi-wheel. The inner and outer charts remain distinguishable from each other.

The combined representation makes it possible to recognize the positions of both people and the astrological connections between them in a single graphic.

Aspects Connect Both Charts

An aspect is a geometrically determined angular relationship between two astrological factors.

In a personal birth chart, aspects can exist between a person’s own planets. In synastry, however, factors from two different charts are also compared.

A simple example:

Moon of Person A

is in an angular relationship to

Saturn of Person B

First, it is determined from the calculated positions whether an astrologically relevant angle exists between both factors and how exact this aspect is.

Only then is the interpretation made.

This takes into account, among other things, the involved planets, the aspect type, and the strength of the connection. From this, an interpretation hypothesis arises regarding how this concrete connection can be experienced in the relationship.

Not Just Which Planets – But Also Where

A synastric connection does not exist in isolation from the personal birth charts.

In addition to the aspect itself, it is relevant which life area of the other chart a planet falls into. The houses provide the astrological frame of reference for this.

Thus, a connection can describe not only which astrological functions are meeting, but also in which area of life this connection can be particularly significant.

One Aspect is Not Yet a Partnership Analysis

Numerous astrological connections can exist between two birth charts. A single one always describes only a part of the whole.

Some aspects point to similar themes. Others affect entirely different areas of a relationship. Supporting and tension-filled connections can exist simultaneously.

Therefore, individual aspects are not simply listed independently of one another. Selection, weighting, and combined classification are necessary to recognize recurring themes and overarching relationship patterns.

The full picture of a partnership analysis is therefore more than the sum of its individual aspects.

Which Relationship Themes can be Examined?

Astrological connections can relate to very different areas of a partnership. These include, for example:

  • emotional closeness and mutual reactions,
  • communication and understanding,
  • attraction, initiative, and desire,
  • responsibility, commitment, and boundaries,
  • autonomy and bonding,
  • influence, power, and control,
  • development and change,
  • closeness, merging, and setting boundaries.

Multiple astrological connections can touch upon the same relationship theme from different directions. It is precisely such repetitions and connections that become important for a more comprehensive partnership analysis.

From Individual Aspect to the Full Picture

AstroScienceHub offers two different levels of partnership analysis.

5-Aspect Analysis

The 5-Aspect Analysis focuses on five particularly defining connections between both birth charts.

Each selected aspect is presented and interpreted individually. This keeps it transparent which concrete astrological connection forms the basis of an interpretation.

  • five selected interactions
  • presented aspect by aspect
  • focused introduction to synastry

Full Picture

The Full Picture considers a larger number of relevant connections and organizes them by central relationship areas.

The focus is no longer just on the individual aspect, but on the interplay of different configurations. Recurring themes, reinforcements, and even contradictory tendencies can be considered together.

  • organized by relationship areas
  • individual aspects within context
  • overarching relationship patterns

The Full Picture is not simply a longer 5-Aspect Analysis. The 5-Aspect Analysis explains selected individual connections; the Full Picture examines how numerous connections interact to form recurring relationship themes.

What can Synastry say?

Synastry provides a structured astrological model of possible interactions between two people.

It can provide hints as to where certain personal characteristics support, activate, or challenge one another, and which themes can repeatedly become significant in a relationship.

These statements are interpretation hypotheses. They can be compared with the actual experience of the people involved.

What Synastry cannot determine?

An astrological partnership analysis does not decide:

  • whether two people “match,”
  • whether a relationship is good or bad,
  • how long a relationship will last,
  • whether a partnership will be successful,
  • how a person will actually behave in a concrete situation.

It is not a certain prediction and no substitute for personal experience, conversation, or professional advice.

The astrological analysis describes potential patterns and connections. What people make of them cannot be determined from a chart.

From Theory to Concrete Example

How a partnership interpretation arises from a personal configuration and a connection between two charts can be followed step by step using the example of Alex and Sam.

The path leads from a personal core theme through the encounter with the partner’s chart to the concrete synastric connection and its classification:

Sam’s personal core theme
- Alex touches upon this theme
- the connection becomes visible in synastry
- its meaning is interpreted in context
